Google's Gemini app reached 1 billion monthly users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X Tuesday, matching a milestone ChatGPT reached in June, TechCrunch reported.
Gemini grew from 400 million users in May 2025 to 900 million in May 2026 before crossing 1 billion in late July, according to 9to5Google. Pichai called it Google's "fastest growing product ever" and said it is the 14th Google product to reach 1 billion users.
Sixty-three percent of Gemini users now interact with the assistant using voice, and the app generates more than 150 million images daily, TechCrunch reported. More than 100 million people use Gemini on iOS, according to 9to5Google.
Google vice president Josh Woodward said usage data shows Gemini users increasingly favor voice-first interactions, and that about one in five Gemini Live sessions now uses live camera or screen sharing, according to 9to5Google.
For builders, two consumer AI assistants each sitting at 1 billion users means an AI interface is now a default expectation, not a novelty, on most of the phones a product will ship to. Plan for users who already talk to their assistant and expect a camera to work, rather than a text box that has to teach them the category.
