Discovered Materials raised $9 million in a seed round led by Lightspeed India Partners, with Peak XV Partners and angels Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar participating, TechCrunch and CryptoBriefing reported.
The company was founded by Akash Ramdas, who holds a doctorate in materials science from Stanford, and Advaith Sridhar, who previously worked on AI agents at Persona AI, according to both outlets. CryptoBriefing reported that Ramdas' earlier research led to nanoscale interconnect materials later adopted by Intel and TSMC.
Developing a new material typically takes more than a decade to go from a lab discovery to a production ready component, CryptoBriefing reported. Discovered Materials, which also operates under the name Matforge, is trying to compress that timeline to months by running AI agent swarms, built on Anthropic models with custom harnesses, that propose candidate materials and check them against physics simulations, according to TechCrunch.
"We're able to do thousands of guesses a day now by having these agents run 24/7 on the cloud, exploring research directions," a company founder told TechCrunch.
The company is focused specifically on thermal interface materials and conductive interconnects meant to cut the heat generated by power hungry AI training and inference chips, CryptoBriefing reported.
For builders, it's a data point on where narrow, science focused agent products are landing early checks: not a general purpose research assistant, but a swarm scoped to one measurable bottleneck, chip heat, with a physics simulation checking every candidate the agents produce.
