ArXiv said it received $17.2 million in multiyear commitments from the Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets and the Siegel Family Endowment to support its transition to independent nonprofit status, according to arXiv's blog and Library Journal's infoDOCKET.
The money, committed over three to five years, will fund general operations, technical platform work including managing AI-generated submissions, and building out governance and organizational capacity, arXiv said.
ArXiv's move to independence from Cornell University was formalized two months earlier with the appointment of CEO Penelope Lewis and a board of directors, infoDOCKET reported. Lewis said the new funding "provides a strong foundation and momentum for arXiv to continue to grow and serve the research community for the long term," according to infoDOCKET.
ArXiv has run as a free preprint repository for more than 35 years, serving millions of users a year across physics, mathematics, computer science and related fields, according to arXiv.
A preprint server that most of AI research treats as a dependency getting multiyear money committed, instead of relying on year-to-year institutional support, is one less single point of failure for how research gets shared before peer review.
