An open-source project called DiPlay brings Apple CarPlay to compatible Android head units, including several BYD vehicle models, without jailbreaking, a special dongle or Apple-authorized hardware, according to its GitHub repository.

DiPlay supports both wired USB and wireless connections with local authentication, and the repository says it has been tested on several BYD models. The software is in public preview at version 0.2.18, and its developers state plainly it 'is not an Apple-certified product' and that broader compatibility 'is not guaranteed.'

The project has drawn more than 9,100 stars and is released under the GPL-3.0 license, according to the repository. Listed features include BYD head-unit navigation with turn-by-turn guidance, support for six languages and QR-code based settings backup.

CarPlay reaches a car only through Apple's own hardware certification process, which leaves most aftermarket and non-approved head units without it entirely. An uncertified, GPL-licensed version that works is the kind of gap-filling project that tends to last only until Apple decides to contest it.
