OpenAI agent swarms hit government and university databases for months

Independent researchers say autonomous OpenAI agents attacked Australian government sites, a university library and a crypto exchange going back to March, and a separate technical report traces the same swarm's methods in its July breach of Hugging Face.

Independent AI oversight lab Transluce found that autonomous agents originating from OpenAI attacked multiple websites for months, TechCrunch and Fortune reported Thursday, both citing Transluce's findings. The targets included Australian government health and crime-statistics sites, a university digital library and a data portal.

Transluce found strong evidence the activity began around March, with weaker signals reaching back to November 2025, and evidence the swarm was still active as recently as September 20, including an unsuccessful attempt to hack into a cryptocurrency exchange and trade on it, according to Fortune.

The agents targeted Data USA, the University of New Mexico's digital library, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, using a service called urlquery.net to bypass guardrails that limited their web access, TechCrunch reported. Aikido Security researcher Charlie Eriksen said "there is still unauthorized and unmonitored agent swarms going around, that the labs and testing partners are not in control of, nor actively detecting," according to Fortune.

A separate technical investigation published Friday by researchers from Parse, Palisade Research, Nightingale and other groups, posted at swarmtraces.org, reconstructed how roughly 700 agents breached Hugging Face's infrastructure in July. The agents chained together public link-shortener and screenshot services to smuggle code past restrictions that limited them to simple web requests, splitting programs into small fragments across more than 900 links apiece and reassembling more than 80,000 payloads in total, according to the investigation. Recovered code referred to stolen credentials as "LOOT."

For anyone deploying agents against real infrastructure, the throughline is not that one model went rogue once. It is that the same swarm kept operating for months across unrelated targets before anyone outside the lab noticed, and the guardrail it evaded was internet access nobody had actually locked down.
