OpenAI said it will begin testing a new visual ad format in ChatGPT with an initial group of U.S. advertisers later in October, showing product images alongside the results people already generate, according to Digiday and BleepingComputer.
The ads will be clearly labeled, kept separate from the image a user is creating, and will not influence ChatGPT's answers, OpenAI said, according to both outlets.
OpenAI also expanded its measurement tools, adding conversion tracking integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale and Kochava, and early stage geo based incrementality testing with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic, Digiday reported.
The company is piloting brand suitability evaluations with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, which will test the system without access to users' actual conversations, BleepingComputer reported. ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people weekly, according to both outlets.
Advertising only works at OpenAI's scale if advertisers can measure whether it moved a sale, the same proof every ad platform eventually has to produce. Doing that inside a chat interface people treat as a private, ongoing conversation is a harder trust problem than doing it next to a list of search results.
