Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13 and close public access to its API entirely by March 2027, the company said, according to TechCrunch and Contentgrip.

Reddit said RSS has become "a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse," without naming specific bots or companies, TechCrunch reported.

The company will stop accepting new requests for public API access October 31, and apps or users that have not registered or engaged with Reddit by January 12, 2027, will be cut off ahead of the March shutdown, according to both outlets. Moderators who rely on RSS for alerts can switch to Discord Relay, an app on Reddit's developer platform, TechCrunch reported, but Reddit offered no replacement for people who read its content through RSS feed readers outside the communities they moderate.

Reddit's "other revenue," driven largely by AI licensing deals, grew 24% year over year to $43 million in the second quarter of 2026, according to TechCrunch.

The timing lines up the shutdown with the money. Reddit's user-generated content has become a paid product for AI companies, and closing the free, anonymous ways to read that content pushes everyone, researchers included, toward a commercial deal.
